NAZI DUST "Wretched Hour" 12" (RITES-29)

Certain cities make for incubators of specific kinds of music and Tampa, like Detroit, makes for ugly music. NAZI DUST is a hardcore punk band pulling from the nastier moments of 80's Boston hardcore, mostly SIEGE and SSD. Their recording is raw, their drums are pounding, their guitar and bass are buzzsaws of treble and distortion and the vocals are spit with an unreal amount of venom. Violent music from young men in a violent city.

D. VASSALOTTI "Book of Ghosts" LP (RITES-25)

David has been cutting his teeth for 10 years in various bands around the Tampa area. Most recently he's been half of MERCHANDISE and a quarter of NEON BLUD, before that he was one of the primary song writers in CULT RITUAL, and all this time he has had 5+ other projects on deck. Very rarely do we drop the ex-members card at VINYL RITES, but having that kind of musical pedigree is pretty unbeatable. His first solo LP is wildly different from the aforementioned groups, although it shares some of the bedroom sensibilities that MERCHANDISE espouses so well. Luckily for all of us, great song writing transcends genre and with BOOK OF GHOSTS he explores more of the Creation Records and 4AD back catalog. His musical hombre ZZ compares it to FELT and TRANS era NEIL YOUNG. It seamlessly goes from intensely personal singer-songwriter numbers to huge and lush shoe-gazing darkness, from NEW ORDER pop to THIS MORTAL COIL downers. Not only our favorite release on VINYL RITES yet, but it's also one of the most hauntingly beautiful recordings we've heard in years.

Finally, after much work here in Athens completely separate from this boring internet world, the webstore is back in business. It features new and exclusive shirt designs from MAUSER and NAZI DUST, 4" embroidered MAUSER patches and a ton of new vinyl from the likes of VOID, THE FAITH, PLATES, BRAIN KILLER, TERRIBLE FEELINGS and more.

The D. VASSALOTTI lp, BOOK OF GHOSTS, as well as the NAZI DUST 12", WRETCHED HOUR, will be out no later then December 15th. Neither are limited and there will be plenty to go around. Both recordings far exceed the parties previous efforts.

Here's some reviews of the new Diet Cokeheads single, Ocular. It's available in the store now!

Sorry State Records:

Third 7" in the "orifice" series from this noisy Florida punk band. For my money, this is their best yet. Diet Cokeheads have always been able to pound out stomping, bruising noise rock along with the best of them (i.e. Pollution), but on this 7" they significantly up the weird factor. For instance, the creepy noises that begin "Gay Goters" gives the heavy noise so much more impact when it comes in, though even that sounds weird, like the tape is slowed down and decaying. In my book there's no such thing as noise rock that's too weird, and this shit is pretty out there.

Permanent Records:

Raaaargh! The Diet Cokeheads of Gainesville, Florida have returned with "Ocular", their third and final single, on Vinyl Rites, in series featuring a sensory-inspired title (be sure to check out "Nasal", and "Oral"). First off they blast our senses with "M. Dumptruck" a fucked noise rock fuckery ripe with a shaved nod to Floridian brethren Harry Pussy and Chicago's finest repetitive noise punks, Running. Continuing with the forked tongue approach of unharmonized dual vocalists; introducing new drummer Vivienne Rohan's wonderfully damaged pipes, akin to a dented and abused brass cornet, followed by reverbed caveman shouts as found on the previous singles (absent are the Calvin Johnson-isms, but that's OK!). On the flip-per prepare yourself for "Gay Goters", six minutes of slow 'n sludgy pummeling repetition more akin to the thick Stoogesy / Melvinsy riffs previously explored on their split 7" with Neon Blud, but with far more of a tasty Drunks With Guns appeal. KILLER JAMZ.

Samuel Lefebvre for Maximum Rock N Roll:

This record is much more dissonant and harsh than their previous releases and the band embraces their new direction with maniacal zeal. A-side “M. Dumptruck” is like a medley of a couple unreleased Swans and Mars tracks with pre-pubescent Lydia Lunch wailing for help after she fell down a well somewhere in Newark. At some point some space-age noise creeps in and it feels like the soundtrack to a deleted scene in Repo Man where Otto is dancing with the radioactive alien corpses on top of the East LA police precinct before the bomb is dropped. Flip it over. “Gay Goters” is a turgid funeral dirge about 6 minutes long that alternates between slow and fast, loud and quiet but somehow renders any listener immobile in their seat drooling a bit for the length of the song. This is pummeling, eerie, cosmic swamp sludge appropriate for the soundtrack to a future biopic about some sorry sap’s psychotic descent into madness. Throw it on at your next party and stop speaking to any of your friends who complain.

DIET COKEHEADS-OCULAR EP

The A side, "M. Dumptruck", is a heavy nod to fellow Floridians HARRY PUSSY, with harsh noise, a heavy dance beat and the debut of drummer Vivienne Rohan's incredible vocals. The B side, "Gay Goters", is a six minute guitar driven dirge similar to DAZZLING KILLMEN and other noise rocking punk. More extreme, harsher, rawer and more violent then the previous recordings, this is the best Cokeheads offering yet. Split 12" with The Men (Sacred Bones Records) out next on Vinyl Rites.

The first 100 mail order copies will come with an additional 2 color foldout cover and a poly bag with an Ocular sticker on it.

HELLKONTROLL-WANKER WAR EP

The second pressing of Vinyl Rites house favorite, Wanker War. Intense, violent and uncompromising noise punk with super fast drumming and a thick recording. Decipherable songs under walls of noise, not unlike greats FRIGORA and GLOOM, but with a bleaker and more apocalyptic outlook.

Second pressing of 211 copies, red on black screen-printed covers. Stamped sleeves.

In the wake of the the newest middle east conflict in 2002, Dark Lion erupted in Pensacola, FL, a poor Navy town. Dark Lion's lyrics and live show were so full of contempt and violence, so full of the frantic energy that they felt at the time. With the war, siblings joining the army, people in jail all the time and the basic, deep hatred you feel when you are young as the backdrop, they wrote 6 songs of no-wave meets riot grrl punk, but I'm not sure they had any interest in genre. The demo went basically unheard, sold on cassette and CD-R on their one and only tour, despite being a completely uncompromising, original and dangerous punk recording. Few bands are as representative of a time in the way Dark Lion were, Born Against and Bikini Kill come to mind. Musically they are somewhere between Teenage Jesus and Nog Watt, but all their own. RIP Dark Lion, long live Dark Lion.

I am very, very proud to release this. It is one of my favorite recordings ever. I feel honored to be a part of it and I thank Adee Roberson, Travis Fristoe, Scotty Mylxine, Static Gold and the band for all contributing. They were very expensive to make and we are basically selling them at cost because I want people to hear this thing. 300 copies, full color covers with art by Adee, big booklet with pieces by some people listed above, art and lyrics.

Foreign Objects blast through eight songs of upbeat punk, somewhere between Dangerhouse, '77 pogo, riot grrl and early post-punk. They get compared to Wire and Bikini Kill a lot, I hear more Electric Deads and X.
